My thoughts on King of Vegas with Mike Matusow

I finally got to catch a little of the show yesterday. I can't say that anything about this format appeals to me. As much I wanted to LIKE the show, I couldn't endure a whole episode. The format goes like this:

1. Half the field plays a game like BlackJack. The other half plays "Red Dog" (which is a BS game where you bet on the dealers card landing in between your two cards. For example, if you have 7 K then the dealers card must be 8,9,10,J,Q. It's a sucker bet in my opinion.

2. The four worst players from each game have to play in the Texas Hold Em Death Match. I didn't make that name up, they really call it that...

3. What happens after that I dunno because I had to turn it off.

The players are clearly encouraged to trash talk each other and it comes off as being contrived and poorly executed. There's a guy named Chainsaw who says, surprisingly "Hey man, I'll break out the chainsaw on your ass"... Spare me.

My mother always said "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all". Good advice Mom, I'm done with this article.

The two sides of Mike Matusow

I just read an interesting article on Mike at Card Player. It's written by Michael Craig, a friend of Mike's and a fellow poker player, writer, and public speaker.

It's a good read and presents two sides of Mike that many people fail to think about. Take away the made for TV attitude and meltdowns. Peel back a few layers and inside, you'll see that Mike is just like you and me. He has good days and bad days, he has plenty of demons too. So what if his demons include drugs, jail, and 6 figure losses at the sports book? I'd bet most of us would trade for a day in his shoes anytime....

Mike to be a guest on Spike TV's new show "King of Vegas"

Starting on January 17th at 10PM EST, "King of Vegas" will premier on Spike TV. It's a new gambling show that is trying to break the mold of typical gambling shows. It will pit known gamblers from different games against each other to determine who the real King of Vegas is. While poker is still in the mix, it will also include games such as Pai Gow, Blackjack, Roulette, and even sports betting.

You will see some familiar faces if you're a poker fan, most notably of course is Mike "The Mouth" Matusow. You'll also see poker professionals David Williams and Evelyn Ng. Other players include "Hollywood" Dave Stann from the professional BlackJack ranks.

The players will compete for a first place prize of 1 million dollars (is it just me or it becoming commonplace to give away a million bucks now?), although they may have the change the "King" designation if Evelyn wins :)

The show will run for 10 weeks and according to co-host Wayne Allyn Root (the most prominent sports handicapper in the world), "We think King of Vegas could become like American Idol. Imagine the future, with thousands lined up at each city for audition tours to be the next King of Vegas!"
